Kissing our way into the New Year

Kissing our way into the New Year

By Dave Stancliff For the Times-Standard
posted: 12/28/2008 01:31:06 AM PST

Have you ever been to a New Year's party where, at the stroke of midnight, everyone started kissing? Who hasn't? It's an old tradition and also a superstition.

In Biblical times the act of kissing or touching ones lips to those of another, or to another person's cheek was a token of affection or respect.

Kissing was common not only between male and female relatives (Genesis 29:11; 31:28), but also between male relatives. (Genesis 27:26, 27; 45:15; Exodus 18:7; 2 Samuel 14:33) It was likewise a gesture of affection between close friends. (1 Samuel 20:41, 42; 2 Samuel 19:39) Kissing might accompany a blessing. (Genesis 31:55)

Historians credit the Romans (are we surprised?) with starting the tradition of kissing and merrymaking on New Year's Eve. They called it the Festival of Saturnalia. Later on, the English and the Germans would celebrate the coming of the new year by kissing the first person they met when the bells chimed twelve.

Europeans have celebrated with masked balls on New Year's Eve for hundreds of years. Tradition says the mask symbolizes evil spirits from the old year and the kiss (after taking off the mask) is an act of purification.

An observation:

Kissing and drinking on New Years Eve seems to be now an entrenched tradition in most western countries. Consuming alcohol at celebrations is just a given. It’s so easy to grab a beer, have a glass of wine, toast with champagne at a special event. For many people, a drink or two is easy to handle. However when the drinking becomes the all-consuming need something is seriously out of balance. It’s so easy to start drinking, but quitting drinking is a whole different story particularly for those people who over drink. If you know of some one who seems to be starting on that downward spiral towards alcoholism there are a number of options for interventions. Aside from AA or detox / rehab centers, the most common drugs associated with stopping excessive alcohol consumption are: Disulfiram, also known by the brand name Antabuse, which is used as an effective treatment for chronic alcoholism by discouraging the consumption of alcohol and Naltrexone which belongs to a class of drugs known as opiate antagonists. It works in the brain to prevent opiate effects. Although Naltrexone has a lengthy history of successfully treating alcoholism, it is not sufficient when taken alone. Naltrexone does not reduce the cravings for alcohol, nor does it reduce the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Naltrexone is most effective when taken in concert with other forms of treatment, including other medications, therapy, counseling, and 12-step programs.

However, there is a new drug called Baclofen whose action on the GABA receptors in the brain may help lessen cravings and withdrawal symptoms for alcohol. While commonly used to treat multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injuries, baclofen is still undergoing testing as a treatment for alcoholism. Although baclofen has not yet received approval by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) as a safe and effective treatment for alcohol or drug use disorders, doctors in Europe prescribe baclofen as the primary treatment for people who drink excessively. A new online site LifeBac is promoting a program that includes both pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. LifeBac is not a rehab or treatment clinic, but a collection of modern, science-based tools to empower people to avoid the downward spiral into alcoholism. Unlike other approaches to dealing with excessive drinking, the LifeBac program does not require total abstinance. For those people who are able to take baclofen, some studies have shown a 65% success rate for treatment-resistant alcoholics, allowing them to return to low- or medium-risk drinking. That’s right, this treatment doesn’t require abstinence although many people do stop all drinking. Preliminary open-label studies from Italy have demonstrated the effectiveness of baclofen in reducing alcohol use among the alcoholics. In addition, results from a clinical study conducted by Brown University show alcohol-addicted participants receiving baclofen were able to abstain from drinking for longer periods of time than those who didn’t receive the drug. It is a drug that is worth considering if excessive drinking is a problem.

PNC to buy National City

Oct. 24 (Bloomberg) -- PNC Financial Services Group Inc., Pennsylvania's biggest bank, plans to buy National City Corp. for about $5.2 billion in stock after receiving U.S. Treasury funds.

PNC will pay $2.23 a share, 19 percent less than National City's closing price yesterday, to create the fifth-largest U.S. bank by deposits, the Pittsburgh-based lender said today in a statement. The $7.7 billion of Treasury funding, part of the government's $250 billion plan to recapitalize banks, ``put this transaction on a very solid footing,' PNC said.

National City, once among the nation's top 10 subprime lenders, joins Washington Mutual Inc. and Wachovia Corp. in submitting to takeovers after losses tied to failed home loans. Cleveland-based National City lost more than $3 billion during the past five quarters, and its stock plunged 87 percent this year. PNC is still profitable.
